2014 Manhattan Softball Schedule

Manhattan College became the first MAAC school to unveil their 2014 softball schedule as the countdown to the new season is on.

The Lady Jaspers will play 53 games in 2014, 25 of them at home. Highlighting the schedule of course is the new 20 game conference slate. The LJs will open MAAC play on March 29 when they host new rival Quinnipiac. They will play the other new member of the conference, Monmouth, on the final day of the regular season at Monmouth.

Manhattan will open their season on February 14 at the North Carolina A&T tournament. On the weekend of February 28, they will take part in the Towson tournament. After that, the LJs will open their home schedule with a pair of doubleheaders; vs. Hartford on March 4, then Hampton on March 13. They will then play one more tournament, at George Washington, on the weekend of March 14. On March 21 and 22, the Lady Jaspers will play home and home single games with local school Long Island. On April 5, new division 1 school UMass-Lowell will pay a visit to Manhattan for a doubleheader. Lehigh, Wagner and Sacred Heart will be other non conference foes coming to Gaelic Park in '14.

Even though there are two new teams, and four more games, only four teams will qualify for the MAAC tournament. Competition will be tight.

Adding 2 teams to the conference & not expanding the tournament??? Who's bright idea was that??? Sounds like a penalty to the previous MAAC teams to me!

I asked them about it last season, and they said they would consider expanding the field after this upcoming season.

Sounds like they had no plan so they decided to procrastinate. The AD's & coaches need to show the athletes they are leaders with a plan in place.... before they accepted 2 new teams into the conference. They've taken away scheduling flexibility for the teams & lessoned there chances for post season play.
It's just pure common sense to expand the MAAC tournament when you add teams. I guess common sense is not so common anymore!
The season is far from being started. Just a thought....maybe the decision makers in the MAAC Conference should take the time to sit down & reevaluate expanding the tournament.

I totally agree with the previous comments.
Is there a way to get this message to the MAAC Conference decision makers?

I chatted with one of them during the tournament last season, and it didn't seem to occur to him to expand the field. But he did say it would be discussed. I think it would be better if the coaches got involved in it.

I hope the coaches are reading these posts or thinking about requesting an expansion of the tournament in 2014.
If they do not get together & ask it may not happen.
I also agree the teams in the MAAC before the expansion have been penalized with a less flexible schedule & less of a chance to make it to post season play!
Coaches please speak up!!!!

It will not happen this year. If it does next year it will be similar to that of baseballs expansion. 6 teams in tournament and not every conf team playing every other conf team, 3 games series against only part of conf teams

When did the number of baseball teams expand in the MAAC Conference?

Am I reading this correctly? The baseball tournament was expanded to 6 teams when the 2 new teams joined the MAAC conference but the softball tournament is not expanding?
Does anyone know?

I just checked the MAAC site, and I see only four seeds for the next baseball tournament.

Thanks WNY! I was just checking....I wouldn't be surprised if they expanded the baseball(boys) tournament & not the softball (girls) tournament. There seems to be a pattern of inequality lately. Just my opinion.
