The Fairfield Stags became the first MAAC team to qualify for the conference's tournament when they swept St. Peter's Saturday in Jersey City, NJ.
Since losing their opening MAAC game 10-0 to Marist, Fairfield has been on a tear, winners of 14 of their last 15 conference games. They jumped in front 2-0 in game one of this doubleheader with a bases loaded walk to Lauren Liseth in the top of the third inning, and Gianna Kinhofer's RBI double in the top of the fourth inning. St. Peter's got one back in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to Samantha Storm's RBI, but the Stags would take a four run lead in the top of the fifth inning, via Tori Reed's two RBI double and an unearned run scored by Tori after a St. Peter's error. Erica Colon's two run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning gave the Peacocks some hope, but Fairfield shut the door in the top of the seventh when Kristen Filicia drove home a pair of runners. Rae Ball earned another conference win, striking out six in the effort. Erica Colon suffered the loss. With this win, Fairfield officially locked up a spot in the MAAC tournament, which will be played on their home field this season.
Fairfield stormed out of the gate in game two, scoring seven runs in the first three innings while pitcher Becca Trott completely shut down the St. Peter's attack, throwing a five inning no hitter and striking out nine in the 11-0 win. Gianna Kinhofer continued her fine freshman season, blasting two home runs good for four RBIs. Kristen Filicia drove home a pair of runs for the Stags.
Fairfield improved to 14-2 in the MAAC; St. Peter's fell to 4-10.
