As the 2014 MAAC softball regular season winds down this weekend, the final standings are still very much in doubt. We know that Fairfield, Marist and Iona have all clinched spots in the upcoming tournament, which will be held in Fairfield. Four teams still have a chance to finish in first place, although Fairfield and Marist have the best chance of doing so. This season, with six teams qualifying for the tournament, the first two finishers will receive a bye on the first day, so the top teams still have plenty to play for this final weekend.
Quinnipiac, St. Peter's and Rider are the only teams currently who have no chance of qualifying for the tournament, but each of them still has a potential say in deciding who goes and who doesn't. Canisius and Niagara are the two teams on the outside who still have a chance to qualify; each must win their remaining four games, and hope for some help. Siena, Monmouth and Manhattan are all currently in the top six, but a final losing streak by any of them could end their season on Sunday. So it looks like their will be a lot of heated action these final two days, beginning on Saturday!
