Melanie White Grounds The Hawks

Marist pitcher Melanie White has become a force
Marist 4
Monmouth 0

The top seeded Marist Red Foxes advanced to the MAAC Championship winner's bracket game when they beat Monmouth Thursday 4-0 in Fairfield, CT.

It wasn't until late in the season that junior Melanie White worked her way into the Marist starting rotation for MAAC games, but she's made the most of her opportunity. And suddenly she's become a shutdown pitcher. She shutdown the Monmouth Hawks today, keeping them off the scoreboard. The only trouble she had came in the first inning when, after striking out the first two batters she faced, she gave up two singles, and hit another batter to load the bases. But she got out of that jam, and allowed only one Monmouth hit the rest of the way. In the meantime, her teammates got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring all four of their runs with RBIs coming from Alyssa Zahka, Janna Korak, Nicole Cheek and Haley Birnbaum. Melanie White controlled the remainder of the game, striking out eight.

Marist will play Friday against Iona in the winner's bracket game. Monmouth will play Manhattan in an elimination game originally scheduled for today that got postponed due to rain in Fairfield.
