|Freshman Sydney Underhill tossed a 3 hitter|
The #5 Monmouth Hawks edged the #4 Siena Saints 2-1 on opening day at the MAAC Championship in Fairfield, CT.
As a freshman, Monmouth's pitcher Sydney Underhill was thrown right into the action this season as one of the Hawks' two pitchers. She struggled a bit early in the season, as freshmen will, but as the season has progressed, so has she. She may have pitched her finest game of the season Wednesday in Fairfield as the MAAC tournament began, holding Siena to one run on three hits. For most of the game, all Siena seemed able to muster off of her were ground balls, easily gobbled up by her infielders. In fact, Siena's only run came as a result of a ground ball she herself could not handle, in the bottom of the sixth inning. This extended the frame, and led to Jessika-Jo Sandrini's RBI single and an unearned run. But that's all the Saints would get. Monmouth got all they would need in the top of third inning, with two RBIs coming off the bat of Justene Reyes, which scored Jill Freese and Nikki Sandelier, both of whom were walked by Siena pitcher Jessika-Jo Sandrini. J-J held the fort the rest of the way, limiting the Hawks to only five hits, but Sydney Underhill was in complete control of this game.
Monmouth will take on #1 seed Marist Thursday morning. Siena is still alive in the double elimination format, and will meet a team yet to be determined.
