With the glory days of Mike Rappl now in the past, Canisius will strive to establish themselves in the MAAC under new head coach Kim Griffin. The Golden Griffins lose a number of players, not all to graduation, and enter the season with only 14 on their roster. Gone is pitcher Jen Consaul after a fine career; the Griffs will depend on a pair of freshmen (Madi Weathers and Erika Mackie) in the circle this season. Both performed very well during fall ball. If they can carry that into the season, Canisius has offensive punch at the top of their lineup that would give them the chance to return to the tournament for the first time since 2012.

2015 Iona Softball Schedule

The Iona College Gaels will begin defense of their MAAC title on the weekend of February 20 at the N.C.-Greensboro Spartan Classic. On the weekend of March 6 they will be in Fairfax, Virginia for George Mason's Invitational tournament. Then it's off to Southern California for the Gaels, where they will play in a tournament hosted by Cal State Northridge beginning March 13. On March 17, Iona will play a split doubleheader at Loyola Marymount vs. the host Lions and Farleigh Dickinson.

When the Gaels head back east, they will open their home schedule vs. Army on March 24. They begin conference play at home on the weekend of March 28, facing Canisius and Niagara. The Gaels will close their regular season at home vs. Fairfield on May 2; then at Siena the following day. Iona will have eight home dates in 2015.

Sarah McMahon P (2-2; 5.54 ERA)
Lauren Filardi IF

The Gaels won the MAAC Championship in 2014, their fourth title in five seasons. They have lost  key performers to graduation, but will field a very strong senior class, all three of whom are All-MAAC honorees with plenty of championship experience. With strong hitting throughout their lineup, and experienced pitching, the Gaels will compete for another championship in 2015.

Destiny Holani Signs With Canisius

Destiny Holani of Honolulu, Hawaii has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Canisius College beginning in the 2016 season.

Although Destiny Kaapuni Alohalani Holani will not be the first Hawaiian to play softball in the MAAC, she will be a first at Canisius. Destiny is in her senior season at Roosevelt high school in Honolulu, and has an interesting sports background. She's a catcher, but initially played baseball for seven years as the only girl on her team. She didn't begin playing softball until age 11, and her baseball background made the transition easy for her. She's a speedy, extra bases hitter, pounding out many doubles and triples over her playing career. Destiny plays travel ball with the Kaikamahine Softball Club.

Congratulations Destiny!
