The Siena Saints' softball program took a big step forward in 2014, again qualifying for the MAAC tournament after a fine season and then winning their first ever post season game. The Saints return a very strong upper class, with three All-MAACers in the group. They all now have plenty of winning experience, and have been quite productive during their careers. Gone is pitching stalwart Jessika-Jo Sandrini, but Siena has a good group of pitchers who all will probably contribute significantly. Also coming aboard is a promising transfer, catcher Sammy Smaldone, and a very talented group of freshmen. This well coached team now must have just one goal...winning it all. They have all the tools to accomplish that in 2015.

2015 MAAC Softball Preview - St. Peter's Peacocks

Nicole Olmedo not being named All-MAAC was an injustice
2014 Record: 4-16 (10-42) 10th Place

Nicole Olmedo 1B (.362; 6 HR; 17 RBIs)
Taylor Corretjer 2B (.188; 7 SB)
Chelsea Crews C/OF (.179)
Fran D'Amato SS (.210; 7 SB)

Candice Koch DP (.237)
Alyssa Ruiz P/2B (1-1; 9.08 ERA; .250)
Samantha Storms 3B/1B (.227; 4 HR; 18 RBIs)

Nicole Feoli 2B/SS
Skyler Hoyt SS
Kristen Kelley OF
Shamar Sanchez SS/OF
Jill Silvanic C

The Saint Peter's Peacocks had a stretch in the 2014 season that saw them win five of six games, including three conference wins. They were in legitimate contention for a tournament spot until a tough, late inning loss vs. Monmouth. It was plain that the team needs to learn to win the important games, and that will be their goal in this new season. Led by senior Nicole Olmedo, who had an All-MAAC type campaign in '14, the Peacocks have some offense firepower in place, and also showed they can run with the best of the MAAC, stealing 63 bases. But they need a pitcher to step up and keep the team in games this season. St. Peter's has added a couple of transfers to their roster, and a very talented freshman class, all of whom will have the opportunity to see significant playing time.

2015 MAAC Softball Preview - Rider Broncs

Junior Dana Sensi is a career .300 hitter
2014 Record: 4-16 (6-41) 11th Place

Ally Breeden C (.144; 2 HR)
Amanda Irving OF (.294; 4 HR; 17 RBIs)
Gina McCool SS (.248)
Madison Rittley OF

Montana Berg P/1B (1-7; 7.83 ERA; 1.86)
Emily Cottrell 3B (.214; 5 HR)
Samantha Judd OF (.200)
Dana Sensi 1B (.302; 21 RBIs)
Kim Valdes C (.268)

Megan Ailand P (0-3; 4.10 ERA)
Morgan Benedetti OF (.214)
Amanda Crimarco SS/2B (.202; 2 HR)
Delaney DeMello P (2-15; 5.60 ERA)
Kaitlyn Kallert P (3-10; 5.73 ERA)
Megan McDonough P/1B (0-6; 5.11 ERA; .274)
Josettee Spencer OF (.333)

Monica Clark OF
Samantha Collura OF
Morgan DiVello P
Toni Nino OF
Jayme Zeilman P

The Rider Broncs will look to rebound from what was perhaps their toughest season. Coach Carroll has stocked her roster this year with seven pitchers after recent seasons have seen the Broncs suffer injuries at that important position and leaving a shortage. She'll be looking for development from one or more of the four sophomore pitchers, each of whom saw significant innings as freshmen. Rider has a number of upperclassmen who have shown themselves to be good hitters during their career; they will need to take leadership roles for the Broncs to progress. Coming aboard is a very talented freshman class; all of whom will have the opportunity to step right into the lineup as regular players.

2015 MAAC Softball Preview - Quinnipiac Bobcats

Jordan Paolucci being left off the All-MAAC team was an injustice
2014 Record: 6-14 (11-36) 9th Place

Jordan Paolucci C (.357; 9 HR; 26 RBIs)
Nikki Barba SS (.336; 6 HR; 23 RBIs)
Brittney Cyr OF (.077)
Hannah Lindsley P (6-10; 5.77 ERA; .241; 2 HR)

Molly Jarrett 3B (.111)
Abby Johnson OF (.315; 10 SB)
Sydney Robey P (2-17; 5.12 ERA; .273; 6 HR; 23 RBIs)
Courtney Solt OF (.306; 9 SB)
Katie Strong OF (.200)
Dani Edmands C/IF (.214; 14 RBIs)
Noelle Wagner C (DNP)

Keilani Finley OF (.256)
Kathryn Vitale PR (2 SB; 6 Runs)

Maria Ascher SS/3B
Emily Czaja 2B
Casey Herzog P
Miranda Magana 3B

The Quinnipiac Bobcats struggled in their inaugural MAAC season, finishing in ninth place. They have a sometimes potent hitting lineup, led by fifth year senior Jordan Paolucci. Jordan played most of 2014 injured, which made her offensive numbers even more impressive, including leading the MAAC in hitting during conference games. She's fully recovered from off season surgery. Also returning is ALL-MAACer Nikki Barba. But the Bobcats did have trouble in the pitching circle last season, with no individual ERA under 5.00. They hope freshman Casey Herzog, who was an All-NY State performer in high school, will help to fill the void and give them a more balanced lineup with which to compete for a tournament spot.

2015 MAAC Softball Preview - Niagara Purple Eagles

Amanda Werth is a career .300 hitter
2014 Record: 8-12 (18-30) 7th Place

Ambur Farmer OF (.188; 2 HR)
Desarae Maldonado 2B (.263; 2 HR; 18 RBIs)
Katie Gruarin OF (.250)

Sydney Smyers P (2-1; 3.97 ERA)
Ally Gay OF (.128)
Victoria Bretz C Transfer
Taylor Grieger P Transfer

Ali VanGiesen 2B/OF (.325)
Alexandra Moore 2B
Rachel Ziarnowski SS/C (.233)
Chanelle Ward SS (.250)
Sarah March C (.172)

Brianna Clark 3B
Sarah Trifoso OF
Danielle Stockman IF
Jessica Chandler 1B
Taylor Moody C
MaryKate Richberg IF

The Niagara Purple Eagles will be somewhat of a new look team in 2015, with a talented group of freshmen coming aboard along with two transfer players. All-MAAC 3B/P Bridget Hogan will miss this season with a medical redshirt. This will leave Niagara with only two pitchers for the season; one of them a transfer. Sophomore Sydney Smyers should be seeing the bulk of the action in the circle. She showed promise as a freshman with a 2-1 record, but pitched only 30 innings. The Purple Eagles will have to get offensive production throughout their lineup to make a run at the tournament in '15.

2015 MAAC Softball Preview - Monmouth Hawks

2014 Record: 12-8 (22-21) 5th Place

Sydney Underhill P (18-15; 3.18 ERA)
Rachel Shotzbarger SS (.333; 2 HR; 24 RBIs)
Justene Reyes OF (.304; 2 HR; 21 RBIs)

Chloe Howerth OF
Katie Baron OF
Kaelyn Buskey IF
Raeann Buskey OF
Amanda Riley P
Brooke Redmond C

The Monmouth Hawks enjoyed a successful inaugural season in the MAAC, qualifying for the postseason, and winning a tournament game. They did so with a very small roster. This season they have added two transfers, and a talented freshman class. Pitcher Sydney Underhill appeared in every game as a freshman, the only pitcher in the nation to do so. But she only got stronger as the 2014 season wore on; by the end she was one of the best pitchers in the MAAC. The Hawks will again ride her arm this season. This well coached team should be in the hunt for a championship in '15.

2015 MAAC Softball Preview - Marist Red Foxes

Senior Taylor Kuzma is coming off her best season
2014 Record: 16-4 (27-24) 1st Place

Taylor Kuzma OF (.382; 7 HR; 36 RBIs; 18 SB)
Janine Lalli P (8-5; 3.37 ERA)
Melanie White P (7-7; 2.41 ERA)

Maureen Duddy OF (.336; 20 SB)
Colleen McWilliams 1B/OF (.194)
Kyrsten Van Natta SS (.327; 9 HR; 39 RBIs; 23 SB)

Jordynn Jo Barrera 3B (.222; 2 HR)
Becca Freeman C (.306; 2 HR; 17 RBIs)
Janna Korak OF (.331; 5 HR; 26 RBIs)
Jayne Oberdorf P (1-5; 7.85 ERA)

Brittany Colombo INF
Gabrielle Kelliher OF
Kourtney Paul OF
Miranda Perez OF
Samantha Reilly C

The Red Foxes suffered a big loss when former MAAC Rookie of the Year Nicole Cheek transferred to another school after the 2014 season. However, Marist will retain a very strong and experienced roster this season, including three upperclassmen coming off All-MAAC seasons (sophomore Janna Korak is the fourth All-MAACer on the team). Their top two pitchers are now seniors, and both had good seasons in '14. Melanie White in particular was outstanding down the stretch. With a well coached lineup still filled with good hitters and runners, expect the Red Foxes to make another run to the top.

Anna Crowley P/OF (3.09 ERA; .188)
Andi Stallard C/OF (.217; 15 RBIs)
Zee Pierce 1B
Meredith Bryant OF (.250)
Emily Cutler OF (.127)

Stephanie Reinhardt SS (.224; 18 RBIs)
Jenn Vazquez 1B (.303; 10 HR; 43 RBIs)
Danielle Gabriel P (4-6; 3.84)
Madison Bailey OF (Injured)

Victoria Ross OF
Briana Matazinsky P/SS
Rachael Mumma 2B

Manhattan was the surprise of the MAAC tournament in 2014, reaching the championship game out of the sixth seed.. They performed the incredible feat of beating three quality teams in one day to do so. They lost the championship game, but hope the experience will propel them to a championship of their own. The Lady Jaspers will ride the bats of twin power threats Elena Bowman and Jenn Vazquez, who drove home 86 runs between them last season. Kate Bowen has graduated, but Amy Bright and Danielle Gabriel both pitched gems in the tournament, and look to lead the LJs in the circle this season. Look for this well coached team to be in the thick of it.

2015 MAAC Softball Preview - Fairfield Stags

Kristen Filicia has graduated, but All-MAAC sister Lauren returns
2014 Record: 15-5 (20-22) 2nd Place

Sammy Ruffolo OF (.304)
Bri Levick SS (.048)
Sam Frungillo 1B (.216)

Lauren Filicia OF (.361; 21 RBIs; 11 SB)
Nicole Capra 3B (.211; 14 RBIs)
Shelby Buttwell C/OF (.263)
Lauren Falkanger P (0-2; 4.04 ERA)

Molly Roche OF (3 games, injury)
Gianna Kinhofer OF (.317; 3 HR; 19 RBIs)
Nicole Gardon P (2-0; 0.38 ERA)
Tori Reed C/OF (.284; 15 RBIs)

MacKenna DiGuilio IF/OF
Rachel Sieber SS
Lauren Peterson C
Destinee Pallotto P/DP
Angelina McGuire OF
Kate Robinson C/IF

Gone from Fairfield due to graduation is their stellar Class of '14, who defined the team through four years of great success. The one constant for the Stags, head coach Julie Brzezinski (entering her 17th season), always has had the Stags competing for the top spot in the MAAC, no matter the players coming or going. Coach B loses her top two pitchers, but has junior Lauren Falkanger prepared to step out of the understudy role. Sophomore Nicole Gardon also showed promise in 2014. With three All-MAACers in the lineup, Fairfield should be able to generate a good offensive threat. The Stags have a very talented group of freshmen coming aboard; keep an eye on Destinee Pallotto, a double threat in the circle and at the plate.
