Red Foxes Open With Impressive Win

3 RBIs for senior Janine Lalli
Marist 6
Virginia 4

After seeing a scheduled tournament cancelled, the Marist Red Foxes scrambled to play anyway, ending up at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Florida where they won their opening game vs. Virginia 6-4 Friday.

Marist sure didn't seem like a team coming "out of the cold" (figuratively and literally!) as they began their season against an ACC team. The Red Foxes pounded out eleven hits in their win today, five of them coming in the first inning, giving them a 2-0 lead after RBI hits by Becca Freeman and Janine Lalli. Virginia jumped in front 3-2 in the top of the second inning, but their lead would be short lived. RBIs by Janine Lalli, Kourtney Paul and Maureen Duddy put the Red Foxes on top for good, 6-3, in the bottom of the 3rd. In the meantime, although she walked seven batters, Melanie White pitched a very good game, allowing Virginia only three hits and two earned runs. Janna Korak, Miranda Perez, Janine Lalli and Becca Freeman each had two hits.

All in all, it was a very solid first effort by Marist, who will continue at the Citrus Classic with a game vs. George Washington today.
