|Christine Costello tossed a two-hitter in game one|
The Iona Gaels swept the Quinnipiac Bobcats in a MAAC doubleheader Saturday in New Rochelle, New York.
When the Iona Gaels were swept at Rider in early April, things weren't looking so good for the defending champions. After all, they stood at 2-4 with their All-MAAC pitcher on the sidelines for the season. But champions have a habit of hating to lose, and since that time they've won nine of ten conference games, and their last eight consecutive conference games, making them the hottest team in the MAAC. The Gaels got good pitching again Saturday - first in game one when Christine Costello shutout the Bobcats 3-0. She allowed just two hits, struck out seven and walked only one. An RBI single by Kristen Turner and a two RBI single by Katie Newton gave her plenty of cushion for an easy win.
Jordan Courage continued her solid MAAC pitching in game two, winning 3-2. Kristen Turner started things off in the first inning with an RBI good for a 1-0 Iona lead. QU did respond with Nikki Barba's RBI single in the top of the third inning to tie the game, but Tori Danner gave the Gaels the lead right back in the bottom of the same inning when she singled home a run. After Quinninpiac's Casey Herzog once again tied the game, 2-2, with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth inning, Iona responded immediately again with Kelsey Long homering in the bottom of the frame. That was all Jordan Courage would need as she scattered five hits while walking no one.
Iona improved to 11-5; Quinnipiac fell to 5-11.
