|Quinnipiac's Keilani Finley hit a homer, triple and double in her team's game 2 win at Rider|
The Marist Red Foxes, with their game one victory at home vs. Canisius, clinched the MAAC regular season title. This secured them the right to host the tournament, which they will (teams can actually decline this privilege). Canisius did win the second game to finish at 13-7. They will be at least the fourth seed.
Fairfield became the fifth team to clinch a spot in the tournament when they beat Iona in Fairfield. The defending champions are locked into the fifth seed. Manhattan closed their regular season by sweeping St. Peter's, and are guaranteed a third seed. They will rise to number two in the unlikely event that winless SPU steals one from Monmouth Sunday, Otherwise the Hawks will earn the first day bye at the tournament.
But the real drama right now is the battle for the sixth and final tournament seed. Three teams are contending for that final spot. Quinnipiac (9-9) is currently in the driver's seat after their sweep of the Broncs at Rider. They host Niagara Sunday. A sweep gets them in outright, but there are other scenarios that would benefit them. Siena (9-9) staved off elimination with a desperate six run, sixth inning rally at home vs. Niagara, giving them a sweep of the doubleheader. They will host first place Marist on Sunday; there are many scenarios for them to win, but they also need help because Quinnipiac swept them earlier in the season and holds the tiebreaker. Niagara (8-10) is still alive, but they must sweep Quinnipiac Sunday, and hope for a Marist sweep of Siena. Certainly not out of the question, but they have the toughest row to hoe.
Stay tuned Sunday for updates as the regular season winds down!
