Hawks Stay Alive; Manhattan Eliminated

Jill Freese delivered the big hit for Monmouth
Monmouth 5
Manhattan 2

The Monmouth Hawks extended their stay at the MAAC Championship with a 5-2 win over Manhattan Thursday in Poughkeepsie, New York. The Jaspers' season came to an end with the loss.

It was a must win game for both teams today, and Monmouth jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, thanks to Nicole Wieczorek's RBI single and a bases loaded HBP RBI by Ashalynn Umiamaka. Manhattan would cut that lead in half in the bottom of the same inning when Anna Crowley blasted a homer over the center field fence. The Jaspers then tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when an error scored Jenn Vazquez. The game would remain tied until Monmouth batted in the top of the seventh inning. Singles by Rachel Shotzbarger and Justene Reyes set the table for Jill Freese. After fouling off a few pitches, Jill drilled one over the left field fence, giving the Hawks the 5-2 win. They beat Manhattan in all three of the teams' meetings this season.

Monmouth will play Canisius Friday in an elimination game.

When the last out was made in the bottom of the 7th inning, the storied career of Elena Bowman came to an end. She exits as Manhattan's all-time home run hitter. Judging from all the intentional walks she received, MAAC pitchers aren't sorry to see her go! But we are.
