|Red Foxes Hit The Magic Number 43!|
The top seeded Marist Red Foxes won their opening game of the MAAC Championship over the Fairfield Stags Thursday on their home diamond in Poughkeepsie, New York.
It's been a record breaking season for the Red Foxes; too many to keep up with! But they broke a significant record today as a team...most wins ever by a MAAC school, eclipsing the former mark of 42 by St. Peter's. They like the records, I'm sure, but they are more focused on coming out on top at the end of this tournament.
MAAC Pitcher of the Year Jayne Oberdorf seemed uncomfortable in the circle to start this game, and Fairfield would place two runners in scoring position in the top of the first inning. But she would eventually settle down, tossing a complete game shutotut, allowing only three hits while striking out seven Stags. Offensively, Thursday was the Colleen McWilliams show. The senior ALL-MAACer belted out two home runs. First a solo shot over the center field fence in the bottom of the second inning; then a two run towering blast over right in the bottom of the fifth inning. And that would be all Marist would need in securing their 43rd win of the season.
The Red Foxes will play Quinnipiac Friday in a winners' bracket game.
