|Claire Oberdorf continued her impressive freshman campaign|
The Marist Red Foxes beat the Fairfield Stags in a MAAC game Wednesday in Fairfield, CT. The second game of the doubleheader was postponed due to rain, and will be played Thursday at 5:30 pm.
The Marist Red Foxes reached another milestone Wednesday, winning their 40th game of the season, becoming the first MAAC team to do so since 2001. St. Peter's won 42 games that season, which is the MAAC record. Marist still has five regular season games remaining. Plus at least two tournament games.
Fairfield scored first in this game when Nicole Capra's sacrifice fly sent Courtney Hankins home in the bottom of the second inning. For a while, Stags' starter Destinee Pallotto and Marist starter Jayne Oberdorf were involved in a pitchers' duel, with the scored tied 1-1 after four innings after Claire Oberdorf clubbed a homer for the Red Foxes. Tori Reed's RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Fairfield the lead back, but Marist, who have been almost unbeatable since late March (their only loss since then was in extra innings to Manhattan), opened the floodgates with a six run sixth inning. Again Claire Oberdorf, hitting .432 in this her freshman season, hit a home run, this time good for two runs. A short while later, Janna Korak smashed a three run homer. Brandi Coon added an RBI double to complete the rout.
Marist is now 14-1 in the conference; an incredible 40-8 overall. Fairfield fell to 9-8.
