Rider's Rachael Matreale Joins The Phillies!

Williamstown resident Rachel Matreale has been selected to be one of the newest Phillies Ballgirls, a coveted position that was given to only eight new standouts for the Macy’s 2012 roster...

Matreale, now a senior in college, said she’s wanted to try out for the position for quite some time now. Having been a long-time fan, as well as a member of a family who always has season tickets to Phillies games, Matreale said she was thrilled for the opportunity.

“To represent a team that you’ve grown up watching and loving... it’s great,” Matreale said.

2012 MAAC Softball Preview: Iona Gaels

With the upcoming season only a little more than three weeks away, it's time to preview the 2012 MAAC softball season team by team, beginning with the two-time defending Champion Iona Gaels.

Talk of the Gaels' chances in '12 as always begins and ends with star senior pitcher Sarah Jackson. A quick rewind back to 2011 shows Sarah losing out on Pitcher Of The Year honors to Sarah Minice, but Sarah J. beating her rival twice on Championship day with a devastating performance. I wrote at the time that Iona's experience would come into play; and it did. But most of all it was the fierce and determined competitiveness of Sarah Jackson that put the Gaels over the top again. Having watched her live and up close for the past years, I can tell you that she is one of the most intense players to have ever suited up in the MAAC. Now entering her "swan song" season, Sarah still has something to accomplish. She will try to win a third consecutive championship for Iona, a feat accomplished only by Canisius. For any team to win it all this season, they will have to beat Sarah Jackson, and probably more than once.

The Gaels will have a double threat this season, with the return of Alyssa Maiese, who will be a redshirt senior in '12. Alyssa qualifying for a 5th season is huge for the Gaels; in 2011 she carried the offense on her shoulders, leading the MAAC in home runs. She should be just as strong this year, but offense isn't the only game she brings. Her pitching improved dramatically as the 2011 season progressed, finally giving the Gaels the second pitcher they need. The Gaels may have the conference's best one-two punch in the circle in 2012.

There was some struggling with the rest of the team in 2011. Junior Eileen McCann battled a foot injury all season, and it certainly affected her play, although she seemed to recover by the end of the season. A healthy Eileen is a very important piece of the Iona puzzle; a return to her freshman form gives the Gaels two formidable power hitters in the middle of the lineup.

Senior Allyssa James and Junior Jodi Petersen (pictured left) both had down seasons in 2011. I don't suspect the slumps will continue this year, but Coach Rivera needs to get these two going in 2012, especially Jodi, who I see as a very dynamic player who has the tools to do everything on the diamond. Jodi has the ability to be the best player in the MAAC. A player to watch for this season is sophomore Katie Jansson who gave us glimpses of greatness, and finished with a solid freshman season. Senior Chelsea Sheehan ended 2011 in very strong fashion, going on a long hot streak. She will bring leadership and solid play. Fellow senior Deanne Algeo lifted her play last year, showing some power along the way. She should be a regular in the lineup. With the probable exception of pitcher Carly Argyle, the Gaels' freshmen will compete for playing time. Carly's time will come next year; she can learn much from watching Sarah Jackson this season.

The Gaels are going to be tough to beat in 2012. They open up their season on February 11 in DeLand, FL.

Manhattan 2012 Softball Schedule

The Lady Jaspers of Manhattan will open their 49 game 2012 season at home on February 29 with a leap year doubleheader against Quinnipiac. They will then head south for ten contests at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL, after which they head back north to participate in Seton Hall's Pirate Classic, which will include a game against Texas Tech. The LJs will open MAAC play at Rider on March 31, and close at St, Peter's on May 6. Manhattan will have 7 home dates in 2012.

Niagara 2012 Softball Schedule

The Niagara Purple Eagles will open their 54 game 2012 season on February 24 in Chattanooga, TN at the Frost Classic hosted by Tennessee-Chattanooga. After that they will play in consecutive tournaments hosted by UMBC in Baltimore, MD. The tournament portion of their schedule will conclude with visits to Miami of Ohio and Lehigh.

Niagara will open MAAC play on the weekend of April 14 when they host Iona and Fairfield. After Big East Syracuse pays a visit to the Niagara campus on May 1, the Purple Eagles will close out conference play with doubleheaders against Canisius and Rider, also at home. Niagara will have 8 home dates in 2012.

Marist 2012 Softball Schedule

The Marist Red Foxes will open their 57 game 2012 season on the weekend of February 18 with a pair of doubleheaders at Norfolk State. Tournament stops at North Carolina A&T and George Mason precede a long trip out west to Hawai'i, where they will take part in a pair of tournaments, playing such powerful schools as Texas, Texas A&M, Cal, and the host Rainbow Wahine.

Upon their return from paradise, the Red Foxes, after doubleheaders at Yale and Holy Cross, will open their home schedule on March 25 against St. John's. They will open conference play on April 7 at Fairfield; and close out on the weekend of May 5-6 at Siena and Iona. Marist will have 8 home dates in 2012, and maybe more as the school will once again host the MAAC Tournament.

Rider 2012 Softball Schedule

The Rider University Broncs have scheduled 53 games for the 2012 season. They will open their campaign on February 24 at the Spartan Classic on the campus of UNC-Greensboro. After participating in George Mason's Patriot Classic the first weekend of March, the Broncs will open their home schedule with a doubleheader against Drexel on March 6. They will continue tournament play with 10 games over a week at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL, and after a doubleheader visit to St. Joseph's, will take part in the Penn Spring Invitational in Philadelphia, PA.

Rider will begin MAAC play by hosting a doubleheader against Manhattan on March 31; they will close conference play on the weekend of May 5-6 when they travel to Niagara and Canisius. The Broncs will have 8 home dates in 2012.

Alexis Roman Commits To Canisius College

Alexis Roman of Chino, CA has verbally committed to play softball at Canisius College beginning in the 2013 season.

Alexis is a second baseman and shortstop at Don Lugo High School in Chino. She earned her third consecutive All-Mount Baldy League selection in '11 when she helped the Conquistadores to a league title. Alexis currently plays travel ball with Pure Fastpitch out of Huntington Beach, CA.

Fairfield 2012 Softball Schedule

The Fairfield Stags will open their 54 game 2012 softball season on February 24 at the Seahawk Classic in Wilmington, NC. The tournament portion of their season will continue in March with stops at the Towson Tournament in Maryland; the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL; and the University of South Florida Tournament in Tampa, FL.

The Stags will then open the home portion of their schedule when they host Stony Brook for a doubleheader on March 21. They will begin MAAC play on March 31 with a home date against Iona. Along the way, they will play all the D1 teams in the state of Connecticut, including UConn, Central Connecticut, Yale, Hartford, Quinnipiac, and crosstown rival Sacred Heart. They will also make a visit to Atlantic 10 power UMass, and host Boston U. They close their regular season on May 6 when they host MAAC rival Siena. The Stags will have 10 home dates in 2012 during this very challenging schedule.

Fairfield Gets In On The Sister Act

The 2011-12 MAAC softball signing period will be remembered as a family affair. The Nappos at Canisius; the Sandrinis at Siena; and now the Filicias at Fairfield!

Lauren Filicia has signed a National Letter of Intent to play softball at Fairfield University beginning in the 2013 season. Lauren will be joining sister Kristen, who had a great freshman season in '11. But as is the case with the other MAAC sisters, Lauren Filicia is a fine player in her own right.

A Palomar League First Teamer at Torrey Pines High School in San Diego, Lauren is a middle infielder coming off a great 2011 season with the Falcons, hitting .324, with 20 RBIs and 17 runs. She hit .365 her sophomore season, and has stolen 12 bases out of 13 attempts the last two years. Lauren plays travel ball with the San Diego Power Surge; she has also played with the San Diego Renegades.

Siena 2012 Softball Schedule

The Siena Saints will open their 50 game schedule on March 2 in Washington, DC at the Colonial Classic hosted by George Washington. The Saints will also take part in UMBC's Dawg Pound Invitational in Baltimore, then stay in the area for a series of games before taking part in UMBC's Spring Classic.

Siena will come back north for doubleheaders at Binghamton, crosstown rival Albany and Seton Hall before opening at home against Sacred Heart on April 3. They will open conference play at Canisius on April 7; their regular season will end on May 5 when they host MAAC rival Marist. The Saints will have 8 home dates in 2012, including an April 11 doubleheader against Atlantic 10 power Fordham.

Jordan Sandrini Commits To Siena

Jordan Sandrini of Adna, WA has verbally committed to play softball at Siena College beginning with the 2013 season.

If the name sounds familiar, it should. Jordan is of course the sister of Saints' star pitcher/outfielder/designated player Jessika-Jo Sandrini. But don't get the idea that she was recruited by Siena because of that fact --- Jordan is a great player in her own right. The two time All-Washington State First Teamer is an outstanding shortstop, who can also play third base. She hit .370 with 24 RBIs in '11, and like her sister, led Adna High School to a state championship. Also like her sister, she is very athletic; an all-star volleyball player and basketball player as well. Jordan plays travel ball with the Northwest (formerly Washington) Sidewinders.

I think it goes without saying that Siena coach Bill Lajeunesse is thrilled with this signing. Certainly Jordan was interested in reuniting with her sister on the field, but again, Siena did not sign her for J-J's sake. But it sure was a great fringe benefit of the previous Sandrini signing!

Brenda Santana Signs With Canisius

Brenda Santana of Los Angeles, CA has signed a National Letter Of Intent to play softball at Canisius College beginning with the 2013 season.

A first baseman at Banning High School in Los Angeles, Brenda swings a powerful bat, boasting a .909 slugging percentage in 2011 to go along with a .455 average as the Pilots' cleanup hitter. An outstanding fielding first baseman who commits few errors, she can also play at third. An All-City Section honoree, Brenda also plays travel ball with the Mizuno Pride Gold.

Sydney Dimon Signs With Iona

Another player from the great Notre Dame High School (Elmira, NY) team will be joining the MAAC.

Sydney Dimon of Elmira, NY will sign a National Letter Of Intent today, becoming a member of the Iona Gaels beginning with the 2013 season. Sydney is a catcher and third baseman for the New York State champions. She had a fabulous 2011 season, hitting .568 with a lofty slugging percentage of .966. She drove home 38 runs in 26 games, with an impressive 18 doubles to her credit. She was named an All-New York State player for her efforts. Sydney is an outstanding defensive player as well, at both positions. She has a very strong arm, and works well with her pitchers. At third base, she uses her good speed to snag bunts. In 2011 she was perfect in the field, committing no errors. Sydney plays travel ball with the Conklin Raiders Gold, the only New York State team to make it to the ASA Nationals last season.

Taylor August Commits To Fairfield

Taylor August of Howell, NJ has verbally committed to play softball at Fairfield University beginning with the 2013 season.

The Stags have landed a gem from perhaps the top high school softball program in the state of New Jersey. Taylor August is a third baseman for the top ranked St. John Vianney High Lancers, a team that finished 29-1 in 2011 while winning division, county, conference, section and state (second consecutive) championships. And Taylor was a big part of their successes.
The Non-Public School First Teamer is a powerful hitter who can go deep often, and hit for average. However, she also is held in high regard as a pitcher for her travel team, the Morris County Belles Gold, so Fairfield may have a double threat coming in.

Nicole Cheek Commits To Marist

Nicole Cheek of Simi Valley, CA has verbally committed to play softball at Marist College beginning with the 2013 season.

Nicole is a speedy outfielder for the two time Marmonte League Champion Simi Valley High Pioneers. An All-League performer, she is an all round threat, at the plate and on the bases. Thrown out stealing only once in her high school career, Nicole led the team and league in triples in 2011. A lefty batter, she can slap or hit for power. She is also an outstanding outfielder, committing no errors in '11, and only one in the past two seasons. Nicole is also a member of the powerful OC Batbusters Gold travel club.

Canisius 2012 Softball Schedule

The Golden Griffins will play a 55 game schedule in 2012, beginning on February 10 at the East Carolina Pirate Classic in Greenville, NC. They will then play tournaments at UMBC, and a pair at the South Florida series of tournaments. At the end of March, they will play a doubleheader inside at the Carrier Dome, with games against host Syracuse and Colgate. Their home opener is scheduled for April 3 against Detroit Mercy; they will begin MAAC play on April 7 when they host Siena.

Jordan Courage Commits To Iona

Jordan Courage of Loomis, CA has verbally committed to play softball at Iona College beginning with the 2013 season.

Here's the profile of Courage (sorry for the pun, but she does have a great name!): Jordan is a pitcher at Del Oro High School coming off a great junior season that saw her post a 17-7 record with a stingy 1.02 ERA. She's a control pitcher, walking only about two a game on average. She doesn't give up many extra base hits; and only surrendered about five safeties per game last season. Jordan also swings a pretty good bat, hitting for a .360 average in '11, with 4 homers and 20 RBIs in 84 at bats. Coach Rivera has recruited her as a pitcher though, and is reportedly ecstatic about her most recent recruit. Jordan plays travel ball with the California Breeze Gold.

Becca Saggiomo Commits To Niagara

Becca Saggiomo of Athens, PA has verbally committed to play softball at Niagara University beginning with the 2013 season.

Becca is a first baseman for Notre Dame High School (Elmira, NY). The Crusaders are the New York State Class C Champions, finishing with a perfect 26-0 record, ranked 34th in the nation, and Becca played a large role in their championship season. She hit .350 in 2011, with an impressive .506 on base percentage. In the field, she committed only one error all season. Becca has played travel ball with the NY Bad Apples, and is currently a member of the TC Tremors.

MAAC Players---Megan Lamoureux, Marist

Megan Lamoureux was among the MAAC leaders in all offensive categories when she suffered a season ending injury on April 20. The Red Foxes went on to play in the tournament, but one wonders if they would have gone all the way had she not broken her collarbone.

Megan was having a Player Of The Year type season in 2011, hitting .367 (good for 5th in the conference) with 6 homers and 34 RBIs in her shortened season. Her slugging percentage (.608), and on base percentage (.478) also were among the MAAC's best. Megan in 2011 was one of the most difficult batters in the nation to strike out, fanning only six times. Despite her injury, she was still named to the All-MAAC Second Team.

MAAC Players---Katie Bowen, Manhattan

Katie Bowen led Manhattan in hitting last season with a .336 average (good for 11th in the conference), and tied for the team lead in RBIs (25) as the lone freshman on a senior heavy team. Katie was at her best in conference play, hitting .429 which was second best in the MAAC. But she has become most renowned for her late inning, clutch hits. She had the game winning RBIs in both games of Manhattan's doubleheader sweep of Marist, driving home four runs. Against Iona, she won the first game with a two RBI single in extra innings, then helped to complete the sweep of the champions with two more RBIs in the second game (3-0 win). She also provided the late winner twice against Lafayette, and did the same against Columbia. I guess she has ice water in her veins! Katie twice earned MAAC Rookie Of The Week recognition in 2011.

Katie was primarily an infielder in 2011, but she also pitches, and looks to spend a lot more time in the circle this season with Manhattan's top three pitchers all having graduated. She finished with a 3-1 record in 2011, and at one point had a 16 inning scoreless streak to her credit.

MAAC Players---Becca Trott, Fairfield

Fairfield's Becca Trott spent most of her freshman season in the shadow of Sarah Minice; understandable considering Sarah was having a fabulous senior season en route to a second MAAC Pitcher Of The Year award. So Becca didn't see much action during the 2011 regular season, but pitched well with an ERA under 3.00 in her time in the circle.

Then she was called upon in the most pressure filled situation possible.

The Stags had made it through the winner's bracket in the MAAC Tournament, and were facing off against defending champion Iona when the unthinkable occurred---Sarah Minice faltered and was removed after surrendering four runs in the first inning of game one. Enter Becca, who one hit the Gaels the rest of the way. But with those four runs holding up, a one game showdown for the MAAC title resulted.

Fairfield Head Coach Julie Brzezinski then made a stunning decision---she started the freshman in game two. And Becca pitched heroically, completely shutting down the champs for five innings, this time allowing only two hits. Ten innings, no runs allowed in a situation that would have had most freshmen quaking in their cleats. Coach Brzezinski probably to this day wishes she had kept Becca in the game with a 2-0 lead that was lost in the 7th inning. But the silver lining was that she found her ace for the next three seasons.

MAAC Players---Katie Lancellotti, Canisius

One of the top defensive shortstops in the MAAC, Katie Lancellotti enters her senior season five home runs short of setting the all-time Canisius record for long balls in a career. Not surprising considering her father, former baseball player Rick Lancellotti, holds the record for most homers in a minor league career. Katie also has a shot at the all-time Canisius RBI record; 52 would get it for her.

Although Katie hits the ball very hard, she's primarily known for her outstanding play in the field. The anchor of the Golden Griffin defense committed only one error in 2011, playing every inning and fielding 152 chances. She was tops in the conference of those fielding more than 100 chances with a .993 fielding percentage. She has outstanding range and a very strong arm; if the ball is anywhere near her, she'll get it.

Katie will be robbing hitters of base hits one more season!

MAAC Players---Becky Zill, Niagara

Playing in the shadow of Teresa Healy didn't hinder Niagara's Becky Zill in 2011. In fact, she matched the MAAC Player Of The Year in power, and was rewarded with a first team All-MAAC spot.

Becky had a fabulous sophomore season, at the top of the MAAC leaders with 12 homers and 35 RBIs. This in only 40 games. She also hit for a .344 average. Her .672 slugging percentage was one of the best in the conference---when the tall, athletic catcher gets a piece of the ball, it often travels quite far. She was tops in home runs in conference games (7), and was one of only two players to drive home 20 runs in MAAC play. She drove home 12 runs in Niagara's sweep of St. Peter's. Becky is outstanding behind the plate also, with a .979 fielding percentage in '11.

Becky will drive outfielders back to the fence for two more seasons!

MAAC Players---Lauren Liseth, Fairfield

Fairfield's Lauren Liseth began her college career on a team that had lost most of it's lineup to graduation. In that pressure situation, she led the Stags to the MAAC Championship game, and was named the conference's Rookie Of The Year.

Lauren began her freshman season by striking out her first two at bats---but then she went on a season long tear. A versatile player who catches and plays shortstop, Lauren can hit for average (.304), and for power (7 homers; 35 RBIs). She led the Stags in many offensive categories, including home runs, RBIs, triples, doubles, slugging percentage and total bases. Lauren is outstanding in the field also, with a .985 fielding percentage in 2011. Behind the plate, she gunned down 15 runners attempting to steal.

Lauren is one of the bright young stars of the MAAC who will keep Fairfield in contention for the next three years!

Versatile Jessika-Jo Sandrini scores for the resurgent Siena softball program

After an astounding freshman season, Siena's Jessika-Jo Sandrini was inexplicably left off the All-MAAC team. She was on this blog's All-MAAC team though, and although I told you a year in advance that she would be a dynamic player in the MAAC, I have to admit that she exceeded my own projections.

Jessika-Jo was at or above .400 all season in 2011, finishing third in the MAAC with a .387 average; more importantly, she was number one in on base percentage (.532) with only the great Teresa Healy being anywhere near her. Amongst the leaders in runs, doubles, slugging percentage, walks, HBPs and fewest strikeouts, J-J was part of a formidable one-two punch with teammate Shannon Jones.

As great as Jessika-Jo is in the batter's box, it's her pitching that the rest of the MAAC is really going to have to worry about the next three seasons. Her 12-9 record with a 2.99 ERA is just the tip of the iceberg with her, and don't be surprised if she becomes dominant very soon. As a freshman, she led the Saints to the third best ERA in MAAC play.

Jessika-Jo will beat teams with her bat and her arm for the next three years!

St. Peter's 2012 Softball Schedule

The Peahens will get an early start this coming spring when they open on February 24 at the Longwood Classic, bolstering their schedule this season with a couple more tournaments, including the Spring Rebel Games and a trip to UMBC in March.
St. Peter's will open at home against Columbia on March 24, and will open MAAC play at Rider on April 7. They will have 7 home dates.

Andi is in her senior year at Katy Taylor High School coming off a great junior season that saw her hit for a .399 average. Alyssa Maiese Will Wear The Red Shirt

Good news for the Iona Gaels...
Bad news for the rest of the MAAC.

Alyssa Maiese will be returning for a 5th season as a redshirt senior with defending Champion Iona. Obviously Alyssa has been healthy for her two seasons with the Gaels; however, she played in only six games during her sophomore season at Indiana (she transferred to Iona thereafter). Not knowing her situation, and not being able to discover anything through research (typical college softball reporting!), I'm assuming she suffered some sort of injury back in 2009.
She was listed as a senior last season, so I'm also assuming she applied for a medical hardship sometime this year.

At any rate, this is a big boost for Iona. Alyssa was the MAAC's home run champion in 2011; she was clearly the Gaels' primary threat in the batter's box, and was a first team All-MAAC selection. She also will provide the Gaels with a solid number two pitcher behind the great Sarah Jackson. It's still very early in this new season, but one would think that the road to the 2012 MAAC Championship runs through New Rochelle.

Kyrsten is a shortstop at Columbia High School where she was named All-Essex County after having a fabulous junior season. As impressive as her offensive numbers are, she may be an even better defensive player. Her high school coach calls her the most agile player he has ever seen; a smooth fielding shortstop who covers a tremendous amount of ground and has a lightning quick release. Amanda Arendt Signs With Niagara

Amherst senior catcher/shortstop Amanda Arendt recently signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Niagara.

"I watched them play a doubleheader when I went on my visit and liked their style of play and how the coach [Al Dirschberger] handled his players," said Arendt. "That's an offensive-minded team and the coach is straight-forward with the players. He expects a lot from them but is not condescending."

Arendt, who is hitting .476 with 14 RBI, has been told Niagara will need a third baseman.

"I'll have to earn a starting spot at third base but the coaches gave me the impression I'll have a chance to contribute immediately," said Arendt. "And I've already played third base, so that won't be a problem."

Kristin Sito Extends Softball Career In Europe

Softball — and not the Cretan ruin of Knossos or grandeur of ancient Rome — is why Sito is in Europe to begin with. During her recently completed senior season at Niagara, veteran coach Al Dirschberger told her about opportunities to play abroad.

“I just kept asking him, ‘Do you have the contacts? Is there somebody I can talk to to get this moving? I would really love to do that,’” Sito said via the miracle of Skype. “He ended up giving me the name of a guy from a Swedish team, and that guy gave me the name of a guy who has a website where players can post their profiles.”

So Sito and her Niagara roommate, second baseman Teresa Healy, posted their information online. They were contacted by several teams and Sito was picked up by the Wil Devils.

Nicole DiVirgilio was a huge reason why the Marist Red Foxes tied a school record for wins in 2011. The three time All-MAAC Team honoree (First Team in 2011), and 2009 MAAC Co-Rookie Of The Year had a fabulous junior season. Nicole hit .333, with 5 home runs and 40 RBIs. She led the MAAC with 15 doubles, was second in RBIs and hits, and was one of the most difficult batters to strike out in the entire nation. In fact, she ranked as the 6th most difficult to fan in all of Division 1, going down on strikes only 5 times in 174 at bats. But more than these outstanding numbers, Nicole was a catalyst for the upstart Red Foxes, frequently coming through in the clutch.

Ausanio Has Marist Softball On The Move

Ausanio and the Red Foxes last month tied a school record (with the 1995 and 2006 teams) for wins in a season, with 33. That's a 23-win improvement from 2010.

"I'm really pleased with how the program is evolving," Ausanio said. "The beautiful thing about coaching women is they're so absorbent. When you ask them to do something, and they see it works, it's amazing to see the transformation on their face."

The Kingston, N.Y., native was named the Anaconda Sports Coach of the Year for guiding the turnaround, during which Marist won 22 of its final 30 games, with a 13-game winning streak. The team led the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in RBIs (253), extra-base hits (122) and on-base percentage (.384) and set a program record with nine run-ruled victories...

2011 MAAC Season Review

Deanne Algeo's 7th inning line out this past Saturday afternoon was the last play of an interesting and unusual 2011 MAAC Softball season. It was a season that saw Marist rise from the bottom of the conference to title contention; it also was a season that saw perennial power Canisius fail to qualify for the tournament for only the second time ever. We saw the Iona Gaels defend their championship by making history---they were only the second school ever to come out of the losers bracket and win it all. And yet, they were two pitches away from not winning.

I'd have to say that the biggest story of the year was an unexpected one. No, not the rise of Marist, but the collapse of Canisius. To put it in perspective, not only had the Golden Griffins qualified for the tournament every season except once since they joined the MAAC, but they had played in the Championship game 16 times in those 20 years, winning the title 12 times. Canisius had lost only one player due to graduation, albeit a very good one (Michelle Fridey), and they seemed poised to replicate their 13-3 record from 2010. Unfortunately for them, 2010 All-MAAC pitcher Caroline Main did not fully recover from the injury she suffered during the 2010 Championship game until the last week of this season. Their other 2010 All-MAAC pitcher, Amanda Baun, had a down year. The team led the MAAC in hitting, but their pitching constantly failed them in key games. Canisius finished with a losing record for only the fourth time in their 31 year history and ended the season four games out of fourth place.

The fall of Canisius in 2011 opened up the race. One team that took advantage was the Marist Red Foxes. Winners of only 10 games the previous season, Marist would treble that tally, and with a challenging and grueling schedule at that. While Canisius' pitching failed, the Marist pitching staff rose to the occasion. Starters Emily Osterhaus and Paige Lewis progressed dramatically during the course of the season. Megan Lamoureux, Nicole DiVirgilio, Haley Birnbaum and others provided heavy bats; Marist easily led the MAAC in runs and RBIs. They were the team most prepared for the conference season, and qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2008.

Fairfield was going great until the last day of their season. Led by senior pitcher Sarah Minice, and bolstered by a large group of energetic freshmen, including Rookie Of The Year Lauren Liseth, the Stags seemed poised to win the conference easily. Sarah had a fabulous season, but failed on Championship day, pitching only four innings while surrendering eight earned runs and losing twice. That's one I will never be able to figure out. The Stags did discover, however, that freshman Rebecca Trott was their up and coming ace.

Iona started the MAAC season slowly, but then won 10 conference games in a row to put themselves in position to defend their title. Sarah Jackson repeated her great sophomore season, highlighted by shutting out powerful Hawai'i in a dramatic 1-0 extra innings win. The Gaels' offense slumped from the previous year, but senior Alyssa Maiese picked up the slack by having an All-MAAC season and leading the conference in home runs. The Gaels twice staved off elimination in late innings in the tournament to eventually win the crown.

Manhattan had their most successful MAAC season ever, winning 12 games. Although their 8 seniors for the most part began the year slowly, they all peaked at just the right time to lead the LJs into the tournament for the third consecutive season.

Siena showed themselves to be an up and coming team as sophomore Shannon Jones had a fabulous season, hitting over .400. She also improved dramatically at shortstop. Freshman Jessika-Jo Sandrini revitalized the Siena program, at the plate and in the circle. These two players became a deadly one-two punch in the Saints' lineup.

Niagara had what can only be termed as a disappointing season. In contention with a 6-3 record, they would lose their last 7 MAAC games and finish in 7th place. Senior Teresa Healy had another fabulous season, again being honored as the conference's best player. But the Purple Eagles seemed to lose confidence down the stretch.

Rider simply could not produce the offense needed to support pitcher Rachael Matreale, who had an ERA amongst the MAAC's leaders, but lost 21 games. And St. Peter's, although they won a conference game for the first time since 2009, has a long way to go in rebuilding their program.

I thought the MAAC was looking fairly strong during the tournament portion of the season, then headed into conference play. Indeed, this season 11 wins would be required to qualify for the tournament. The overall pitching was not as strong this season as it had been in the past though. Did the best team win the tournament? Probably not...but I warned that Iona's experience could play a big factor, and this turned out to be the case. All in all, I found 2011 to be a very enjoyable season.

Abby is an infielder and outfielder at Brentsville District High School. She plays travel ball with the Vienna Stars Gold.

“Siena is just a good fit for her,” said Abby’s mother Pam. “We walked around the campus and she had a good feeling about it.”

Siena Saints head coach Bill Lajeunesse first noticed Carpenter while she was playing in New Jersey with her travel team, the Vienna Stars 18U Gold team. Cathy Rollins, college coordinator for the team, said that Siena’s interest in Carpenter increased late last year, but it was still early for her to make any kind of decisions.

“They started watching her in the summer, but they really started to pay attention to her in the fall. They were hot on her, but it took her a while to get hot on them,” she said...

The Iona Gaels were eliminated from the Norman, OK Regional when they dropped a 4-2 game to Missouri State Saturday.

The Gaels put forth a good effort today, but it wasn't enough as Missouri State scored a pair of runs in the top of the 7th inning to break a 2-2 tie. Alyssa Maiese made her final start in an Iona uniform, and allowed two runs in the top of the 1st inning after a two out double. But she settled down, and was in control until the 7th inning. Alyssa would cut the Missouri State lead in half herself when she launched a rocket over the center field fence in the bottom of the 2nd inning. It was Alyssa's 13th home run of the year, meaning that she finished as the MAAC's leader in that category. In the bottom of the 6th inning, the Gaels came back to tie the game. Jodi Petersen led off with a double to left field, and was followed by an Eileen McCann single. Alyssa Maiese then sent Jodi home with a sacrifice fly, her second RBI of the game, making the score 2-2. It looked as if Iona might win their first ever NCAA tournament game. But after a Missouri State hitter reached base on an error by shortstop Deanne Algeo in the top of the 7th inning, and was bunted over to second base, the Bears' Kirstin Cutter tripled to the center field wall to drive home the eventual winning run. Sarah Jackson then entered the game in relief of Alyssa Maiese, but gave up a double that scored the Bears' 4th run. The Gaels had some life in the bottom of the 7th inning when lead off hitter Chelsea Sheehan was hit by a pitch, but a double play subsequently squelched that hope.

And so ends another MAAC season. I will review what happened in 2011 once the dust settles.

The Iona Gaels just concluded their opening game at the Norman, OK Regional, losing 7-1 to the #15 Oklahoma Sooners.

This game was actually close until Oklahoma broke through for three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning. Iona starter Sarah Jackson looked a bit tired at that time, and I was surprised she was still in. The Sooners did produce 15 hits, so Sarah had some long innings. She was doing a pretty good job after a very rough 1st inning which saw Oklahoma immediately load the bases. But after surrendering two runs, catcher Melanie Gettins turned a nice double play to end the inning and limit the damage. After Oklahoma took a 3-0 lead, Iona scored their first ever NCAA Tournament run when Eileen McCann singled home Chelsea Sheehan, who had led off the 3rd inning with a walk. The Gaels did subsequently load the bases in that inning, but could score no more. And that was as close as Iona would get. But as I said, they were within striking distance until the bottom of the 6th. However, Oklahoma starter Keilani Ricketts struck out an astounding 19 batters.

Iona will face Missouri State Saturday at 4:30 EDT in an elimination game. Missouri State had a surprising game against Tulsa, knocking starter Aimee Creger and her 0.79 ERA out of the game. But the Bears did lose 9-7. So the Gaels better be ready for a competitive game. If Iona should win, they would then play the loser of the Tulsa/Oklahoma game.

The National Fastpitch Coaches Association today named Niagara's Teresa Healy and Fairfield's Sarah Minice as NFCA All-Stars.

Teresa, the MAAC's 2011 and 2010 Player Of The Year, was named to the Great Lakes Region Second Team. At present, she is the conference's leader in batting average (.425) and home runs (12). She is third in RBIs (39).

Sarah, the MAAC's 2011 and 2009 Pitcher Of The Year, was named to the Northeast Region Second Team. She currently leads the conference in ERA (1.58) and wins (18).

I just learned that Missouri State's ace pitcher, Natalie Rose, has been declared academically ineligible and will not be permitted to play in the upcoming National tournament.
She had pitched the bulk of games this season for Missouri State, and done very well, posting a 2.11 ERA and winning 22 games.

Katie Gruarin Signs With Niagara

Niagara-Wheatfield High School (Sanborn, NY) outfielder Katie Gruarin has signed a National Letter Of Intent to play softball at Niagara University beginning with the 2012 season. Katie is a versatile batter, who can bunt or hit away. Her high school coach calls her a leader and hard worker.

Gruarin...will take the short drive to Monteagle Ridge this fall to play softball for the Purple Eagles. Providing fuel to the “nature over nurture” camp, the Falcons senior said she too fell in love with her chosen school’s campus and is excited to be a Purple Eagle.

It also helps, she added, that purple is her favorite color.

“I love the campus there,” Gruarin said. “It’s small and they have my major, I want to go for biochemistry.”

While her brother Chris sided with Canisius in the ‘Battle of the Bridge’ Gruarin said the Purple Eagles softball team made Niagara feel like home.

“When I stayed over there everyone was so nice,” she said. “They made me feel like I belong there.

A couple points I wanted to bring up that may be lost in the excitement.
The 7th inning at bats by Iona's Melanie Gettins and Chelsea Sheehan were epic. They both came up with one out, and with two strikes against fouled off pitch after pitch after pitch. They both ended up reaching base after many pitches. An inch the other way, and it could have been a 1-2-3 inning. Chelsea Sheehan has been the hottest hitter in the MAAC as of late.

And let's hear it for Fairfield freshman pitcher Rebecca Trott. She was magnificient---throwing 10 1/3 innings of 2 hit, shutout ball. She had the Gaels befuddled, and seemed destined for a story book ending. But she was relieved in game two holding the lead. Tough loss for the Stags, but looks like they found their pitcher of the future.

With the sweep, Iona became only the second MAAC team to emerge victorious out of the losers bracket. Canisius had been the only team to have done that, accomplishing the feat three times.

Just in...

The Iona Gaels successfully defended their MAAC title Saturday in Poughkeepsie, NY by defeating the Fairfield Stags twice.

The Iona Gaels became only the fourth team to emerge from the losers bracket to win the MAAC Championship by sweeping Fairfield. The story in game one was Eileen McCann's 3 run homer in the 1st inning, followed by a solo homer off the bat of Alyssa Maiese that gave Iona a 4-0 win. Sarah Jackson struck out 12 in the game. But the real story was the ineffectiveness of Fairfield's Sarah Minice, who was pulled after two innings of game one, and did not reappear until the 6th inning of game two. Freshman Rebecca Trott performed heroically, completely shutting down the Gaels for 10.1 innings, allowing only two hits. Then Fairfield Coach Brzezinski inexplicably pulled her out of game two in the 6th inning with the Stags leading 2-0 and in total control. This move, oddly enough, cost the Stags the Championship. Who would have ever thought that? Sarah Minice surrendered 4 runs in the top of the 7th inning, and ended up losing both games. Deanne Algeo singled home two runs, the tying and winning runs, in that inning to give Iona the dramatic comeback victory.

Iona will find out Sunday where and who they will play in the NCAA Tournament.

Shannon finished second in the MAAC with a .416 average; she hit .413 in conference games. She currently leads the conference in RBIs, and finished first in conference games RBIs. She was second in the conference with a .723 slugging percentage. She also hit 10 home runs, and had a .962 fielding percentage at shortstop. Shannon was chiefly responsible for lifting Siena to a new level. She is a dangerous hitter, who even the best pitchers often avoid.

The numbers speak for themselves---1.28 ERA; and an incredible 0.56 in conference games. A current record of 18-8. Sarah in her senior senior season has led a team of mostly freshmen into the championship game. She has lost only one MAAC game, and that by a 1-0 score. Totally dominant in the conference.

How the MAAC coaches left Jessika-Jo off their All-MAAC teams is beyond comprehension. Maybe they were too busy voting for 5-21 pitchers and .254 hitters! J-J had an epic freshman season, batting .387, third best in the conference. She led the conference with a .532 on base percentage, and had a knack for getting on and scoring at crucial times. She also did very well in the circle, setting a Siena record with 12 wins. She finished with a 2.99 ERA.

Our 2011 MAAC season has come down to this---the #1 Stags vs. the #4 Gaels for the Championship of the MAAC.

Iona must beat Fairfield twice on Saturday to win the Championship, meaning they must beat Pitcher Of The Year Sarah Minice twice. This will be the senior's last and best chance to win the MAAC, and you can bet she'll be firing on all cylinders trying to get her team to the NCAA Tournament for the first time ever. But if anyone could beat her twice, it would be 2010 Pitcher Of The Year Sarah Jackson and the defending Champion Iona Gaels. Iona Coach Roni Rivera has an interesting choice to make. The Gaels must win twice on the final day, something that has been done only three times in MAAC history, and the question is: does she go with Sarah Jackson for both games? She did start Alyssa Maiese in the first game today, against Manhattan, and it worked out, with a well rested Sarah Jackson pitching the second game. But the Gaels had to come back twice to win that game, something that would not be easy to do against Sarah Minice. The whole season comes down to Saturday, so I see Coach Rivera starting Sarah Jackson in game one and going with what brought her there. As for Fairfield, keep in mind that Sarah Minice in the 2009 tournament pitched a 16 inning game, not to mention last season when she pitched and won both games of a doubleheader at Niagara in a must win situation.

The weather has been very good in Poughkeepsie, and Saturday's forecast calls for a very slight chance of rain with 70 for the high temperature. Game time is noon EDT.

Sarah Jackson breezed through Iona's second game of the day with a 9-0 win over the Red Foxes; she struck out 6 while allowing only one hit. Iona had a big 3rd inning, highlighted by Melanie Gettins' 3 run home run. Katie Jansson doubled home a pair before that, and Iona had a 5-0 lead. Chelsea Sheehan capped off a great Friday by hitting a 3 run homer in the 7th inning.

Iona will now play #1 Fairfield Saturday for the MAAC Championship. They will have to beat the Stags twice to win it all. Marist ends their dream season with a 33-22 season; they won 23 more games than they did in 2010.

The Iona Gaels edged the Manhattan Lady Jaspers 4-3 in an elimination game at the MAAC Championship Friday in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The Gaels took a chance by not starting Sarah Jackson in this game, hoping to save her for further action, and it paid off. Actually, Sarah closed out this game to pick up the win, but Alyssa Maiese kept the Gaels close and helped them offensively to come from behind. Manhattan took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning when a two out single by Jen Keller scored Nicole Michel and Melissa Donnelly. The Gaels responded immediately in the bottom of the same inning; first with a Katie Jansson homer to center field, then with a two out Chelsea Sheehan single that scored Allyssa James, who was on 2nd base after a single and wild pitch. The game remained tied until the top of the 5th inning when Monica Evangelista singled home Erika Sullivan to give the Lady Jaspers the lead again, 3-2. Alyssa Maiese tied the game in the bottom of the 6th inning with a big homer over the center field fence, her 11th of the season. In the bottom of the 7th inning, with the game tied 3-3, an error by Manhattan shortstop Melissa Donnelly allowed Chelsea Sheehan to cross the plate with the winning run.

Manhattan ends their season with a record of 25-23. Iona will now play an elimination game against Marist today.

The Fairfield Stags advanced to the championship round of the MAAC Tournament with a 3-2 win over the Marist Red Foxes Friday in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Fairfield put themselves in the driver's seat with a one run victory; they were never behind in this game. The Stags jumped in front early when MAAC Rookie Of The Year Lauren Liseth drove an Emily Osterhaus pitch over the center field fence after a Mikayla Shumate single in the 1st inning. Just another in a long line of big hits for Lauren; but it was certainly her biggest thus far. Marist did come back to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Ashley Corriss doubled home Haley Birnbaum, then a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sarah Carmody scored Caitlin Schell and it was a 2-2 game. The Stags would take the lead for good in the top of the 4th inning however when a two out single by Laura Carta scored Kristina Lingo, who had led off with a single. Marist would place base runners in every inning for the rest of the game, but could not score on Fairfield starter Sarah Minice, who struck out 7 Red Foxes. Mikayla Shumate was 3 for 4 in this game.

So the Stags advance to Championship Saturday, where they will have two chances to win one game for the MAAC title. Marist will play the winner of the Iona-Manhattan game later today.

A predictable pitchers' duel was the story in the day one match up between Fairfield and Iona; the Stags advance to the winners bracket with a 2-1 win Thursday at the MAAC Championship in Poughkeepsie, NY.

The top two pitchers in the conference faced off in a crucial MAAC Tournament game, and once again senior Sarah Minice prevailed. It was a very close game though. Alyssa Maiese stunned the Stags in the top of the 2nd inning when she launched a bomb over the center field fence. It was her 10th homer of the season, and gave the Gaels a 1-0 lead. After that, neither team had many serious chances to score, but the Stags capitalized in the bottom of the 4th inning. Kristen Filicia opened the frame with a single, and was sacrificed to 2nd base base by Mikayla Shumate. A costly throwing error by shortstop Deanne Algeo then moved her to 3rd base. A ground out by Kristina Lingo scored Kristen with the tying run; a throwing error by first baseman Allyssa James moved Lauren Liseth to 3rd base. Lauren scored the go ahead run on an Alli Wigand suicide squeeze bunt. Iona did get a runner to third base in the top of the 5th inning, but from that point onward, Sarah Minice shut the door, retiring the final 7 batters she faced. Sarah Jackson struck out 7 for Iona. Each team had only 3 hits in this game.

Fairfield moves on to the winners bracket Friday morning against Marist. Iona will then play in the losers bracket against Manhattan. The loser of the first game, and the winner of the second game will then play for the right to advance to Championship Saturday.

A pair of 7th inning, 2 out errors cost Manhattan dearly and the host Marist Red Foxes advanced to the winner's bracket with a 4-3 win Thursday at the MAAC Championship in Poughkeepsie, NY.

It finally looked liked softball weather in the northeast as the 2011 MAAC Championship got underway. Ashley Corriss opened the game for Marist with a single in the top of the 1st inning, and was sent home by Aly Klemmer's 2 out single to center field, giving the Red Foxes the early 1-0 lead. The Lady Jaspers responded in the bottom of the same inning when Jaci Rahey launched a homer over the center field fence to tie the game. The Red Foxes jumped back in front with a pair of runs in the top of the 3rd inning. After Sarah Carmody and Nicole DiVirgilio opened the inning with singles, an Aly Klemmer ground ball scored pinch runner Nicole Van Loan; then a Danielle Koltz sacrifice fly sent home Nicole DiVirgilio, and Marist was in the lead 3-1. The LJs cut that lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning when Nicole Michel singled home Melissa Donnelly, who had doubled. Then in the top of the 7th inning, after Manhattan had recorded two outs, errors by Amanda Babcock and Jaci Rahey led to Aly Klemmer scoring and a 4-2 lead for Marist. The Red Foxes had no hits in the inning. A one out homer by Jaci Rahey gave the LJs some hope in the bottom of the 7th, but Marist starter Emily Osterhaus retired the final two batters to secure the win. Melissa Donnelly pitched the first 5 innings for Manhattan, before being relieved by Ashley Rampino.

The Red Foxes now await the winner of the Fairfield-Iona game.

The Fairfield Stags won the regular season title when they split a doubleheader with Marist Sunday in Poughkeepsie, NY.

Emily probably pitched the best game of her young career thus far, shutting out the first place Stags , scattering 5 hits and striking out 8. And she needed to shut down the Stags, because only one run was scored in this game. That came in the 5th inning when a two out walk to surprise starter Nicole Van Loan gave Ashley Corriss the opportunity to drive home Christina Lausch for a 1-0 Marist lead. Emily Osterhaus breezed through the final two innings for her 14th win of the season. Emily went toe to toe with the best pitcher in the conference, and won. And don't forget, she also has a victory over Sarah Jackson under her belt. How's that for mixed metaphors!

So it became a one game showdown---winner takes first place. Marist went with Emily Osterhaus again, while Fairfield started Rae Ball. Rae pitched four solid innings, allowing only a run, then gave way to Sarah Minice who shut the door for the final three innings. The Stags took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd inning thanks to Tiffany Lawson and Laura Carta RBI singles. Marist halved the Fairfield lead in the bottom of the 5th inning when Christina Lausch doubled home Caitlin Schell, who had walked. At this point Sarah Minice entered the game, and it was lights out. RBI singles by Kristina Lingo in the 6th, and Rae Ball in the 7th provided the final margin of 4-1. Rae Ball earned the win; Sarah Minice picked up the save. The loss went to Emily Osterhaus, who pitched 2 1/3 innings.

So Fairfield is the number one seed; Marist number three. It has been a dream season for the Red Foxes, and it continues on their home field. Sarah Minice and the Fairfield freshmen answered a lot of preseason questions with their great regular season performance. Great chance of these teams meeting again, perhaps for all the marbles.

Jessika-Jo Sandrini Sets Siena Record

This photo is Jessika-Jo during her Adna High years, but I really like it, and this is what MAAC batters will have to face the next three seasons.
With her win at St. Peter's Sunday, Jessika-Jo set the all-time Siena record for wins; she did that as a freshman. She has been instrumental in changing the face of Siena softball; she and Shannon Jones will make a formidable 1-2 punch for the next two seasons.
Jessika-Jo is the leading candidate for MAAC Rookie Of The Year, as she also batted .387 this season, including a .532 on base percentage.
I told you about her back in 2009; now I'll tell you that J-J is going to burn up the MAAC in coming seasons, and Siena will make the tournament next year!

Manhattan got great pitching and a 4 RBI performance by freshman Katie Bowen to sweep Iona Sunday in New Rochelle, NY.

After giving up 13 runs to St. Peter's on Saturday, the Lady Jaspers came back Sunday with stellar pitching and finished in 2nd place with the sweep. Game one matched Melissa Donnelly against the Gaels' Sarah Jackson, and had to be decided in extra innings. Iona took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning when Chelsea Sheehan singled home Katie Jansson. Chelsea has been very hot at the plate as the season winds down. The Lady Jaspers made it a tie game in the top of the 6th inning when a Nicole Michel single scored Monica Evangelista. Then it was off to extra innings. Manhattan took a 2 run lead in the 8th when Katie Bowen's two out single scored Melissa Donnelly and pinch runner Amanda Berrios. Katie has won games many times this, her freshman, season, and is a prime candidate for MAAC Rookie Of The Year. A one out homer by Jodi Petersen in the bottom of the 8th pulled the Gaels to within 3-2, but Melissa Donnelly retired the final two batters for the win. The senior pitched well down the stretch last season as well. Sarah Jackson struck out four in the loss.

Game two became essentially "who would not have to face Sarah Minice in the first round". Manhattan's senior Erika Sullivan was brilliant, one hitting the Gaels and walking only one, as is her fashion. Manhattan jumped in front in the 1st inning after a Melissa Donnelly single scored Kristina Walraven. They took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning when Nicole Michel opened with a triple and was sent home by a Katie Bowen single. In the 7th, Katie drove home her 4th run of the day for a 3-0 final. Alyssa Maiese struck out 5 for Iona.

You'll notice that Manhattan's eight seniors have really picked up their play after a slow start. They have a lot of tournament experience. Iona, as defending champs, have that experience also. The Gaels will be the # 4 seed. These were intense games, and perhaps a preview of a great MAAC Tournament.

Lauren Hope made MAAC history in Lawrenceville, NJ Saturday when she stole 3rd base in the first inning of the first game of the doubleheader between her Canisius Golden Griffins and Rider. It was the 113th stolen base of her career, topping the mark of 112 set by Ellen Sarosy at Fairfield in 2003. Lauren stole an incredible 6 bases in the game, a Canisius record and one shy of the National record, leaving her mark as the best base runner the MAAC has ever seen. For the second time this season, she stole home by catching a pitcher asleep. She has been consistently ranked in the nation's top 20 during her career as well.

As for the games---they didn't mean much, with both teams eliminated from post season play. But Rider picked up their second MAAC win of the season in game one behind the pitching of Rachael Matreale, who has pitched well all season. She got a little support today.
Game two saw Canisius freshman Jen Consaul improve her MAAC record to 5-1; 8-3 overall. Stephanie Pfentner hit a three run homer in this one.

Both teams ended their seasons today. And of note: this was only the second time ever that Canisius has not qualified for the MAAC tournament. It was also only the fourth losing season in their 32 year history.

Saturday in Riverdale, NY saw the Manhattan Lady Jaspers clinch a berth in the MAAC tournament with their sweep of St. Peter's.

Manhattan clinched their spot when they run ruled St. Peter's in game one. And they scored all 9 runs in the 1st inning, thanks to homers by Monica Evangelista, Jaci Rahey and Jen Keller. But I'd really rather talk about the very strange game two!

What in the world did the Peahens eat as a snack between games? Maybe they were just sick and tired of being run ruled all the time. At any rate, they stunned the LJs by jumping out to a 10-4 lead after 1 1/2 innings. The Peahens put up 8 runs in the 2nd inning, highlighted by a Vanessa Acosta 3 run blast over the left field wall. Manhattan would then begin to chip away at this lead, and found themselves back to within 10-9 after three innings. Katie Bowen gave the LJs the lead in the 5th inning with a two run single. This lead was increased to 12-10 after Melissa Donnelly doubled home Katie. Manhattan could then relax...not! The Peahens came storming back, scoring three times in the final two innings to take a 13-12 lead. A Kristen Kaneyuki singled tied the game at 12-12 in the 6th; then Erica Colon put the Peahens on top in the top of the 7th when Manhattan pitcher Erika Sullivan threw the ball away allowing Erica to score from 3rd base.
Manhattan began the bottom of the 7th with a Jaci Rahey single; but the next batter, Katie Bowen, lined into a double play, and suddenly the LJs were down to their final out. Melissa Donnelly kept things alive with a single; then Nicole Michel ended the game in dramatic fashion with her homer over the center field wall. Stephanie Gilronan and Alexis Gallagher both had two hits and three runs for the Peahens.

St. Peter's will close their season Sunday when they host Siena.
Manhattan travels to Iona, where the two tournament bound teams will fight for a chance at second place in the conference.

Sarah Minice won twice today in Fairfield, CT, striking out 17 Purple Eagles in game one, and coming on in relief in game two.

Senior Sarah Minice just seems to be getting stronger as her final season winds down. She is now 11-0 in MAAC play, with an ERA under 0.50 or something. She faced a hard hitting Niagara team and struck out 17 of them in game one. She struck out Teresa Healy three times alone. It's kind of scary how good she's pitching right now. She allowed only one hit, to Kristin Sito, and walked only one. The Stags scored all their runs in the 4th inning, both home runs. Ali Wigand hit a two run homer, and was immediately followed by Rae Ball's solo shot. Kim Bryson took the loss for Niagara, striking out three.

Ali Wigand continued her hot hand in game two, driving home three runs and hitting her second homer of the day, another two run shot. Niagara however had taken a 3-1 lead into the 6th inning thanks to RBIs by Kayla Hines, Becky Zill and Alexis Wayne. Ali's homer tied it in the bottom of that inning, then Mikayla Shumate won it for Fairfield in the bottom of the 7th inning with a two out single that scored Laura Carta. Rebecca Trott started this game for the Stags, and pitched well, striking out three. Rae Ball relieved her in the 6th inning, then Sarah Minice came in to shut the door in the 7th. Julie DiMatteo took the loss for Niagara.

These games ended Niagara's season, and the career of Teresa Healy.
Fairfield will now travel to Marist on Sunday for a first place showdown. If the Stags win once, they end up with the first seed. Marist will have to sweep to gain first place.

Iona's sweep of Siena Saturday in Loudonville, NY clinched a spot in the tournament for the Gaels, and eliminated the Saints.

The Saints were still alive entering today's doubleheader, and they began well by putting up two runs on Iona starter Sarah Jackson in the first inning of game one. Shannon Jones drove home a run and scored one with some help from three Iona errors in the inning. But Iona would score three times in the top of the 3rd inning, and never be behind again in this game. An Eilenn McCann double that drove home two runs, and an Alyssa Maiese triple that brought home another gave the Gaels a 3-2 lead. Four more runs in the top of the 6th would seal this game, and a berth in the tournament for Iona. After Melanie Gettins singled home a run, Allyssa James launched a homer to right field that scored three, and the Gaels were in the post season. Sarah Jackson recovered from the shaky 1st inning to strike out 15 and earn the win.

The Saints took an early lead in game two as well, taking a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning thanks to a Mandy Ferro single. Eileen McCann tied the score for Iona in the top of the 3rd inning, reaching home after an error by right fielder Kristen Borsella. Iona took the lead in the top of the 5th inning when Alyssa Maiese doubled home Eileen McCann, and pinch runner Tierney Markou scored on a passed ball. Siena got one back in the bottom of the same inning when Mandy Ferro scored on a Natasha Powlowsky ground out, cutting the Iona lead to 3-2. Natasha singled home Mandy Ferro in the bottom of the 7th to tie the game, but with a runner on 3rd base and one out, Kayla Kaminsky lined into a double play, giving the Gaels another chance in extras. And it was Eileen McCann who took advantage of that chance, smashing a homer over the left field fence to give the Gaels the win, and a sweep. Alyssa Maiese improved her record to 12-7; Amanda Filippazzo took the loss.

Siena will end their 2011 season Sunday at St. Peter's. I'm sure the Saints are disappointed, but they shouldn't be. They have a young team with a bright future. As for the Gaels, they have an interesting doubleheader that they will host on Sunday against Manhattan, a team also in the tournament. Neither of the teams will be able to make it to first place, but could get up as high as second. They very well may meet again next week.

Oh my goodness, St. Peter's put forth such a good effort, but just lost to Manhattan 14-13 when Nicole Michel hit a 2 out, 2 run homer in the bottom of the 7th to win it for the LJs!

Big Day For Siena

I told you in January that Siena was an up and coming team that might make some noise in 2011. Here we are in the last weekend of the regular season, and the Saints are still in the hunt.

Siena, I believe, has qualified for the MAAC tournament only once in their history. So their doubleheader at home against Iona Saturday is huge for them. To break it down, they must sweep the Gaels to have a chance at qualifying for postseason action. Of course that will not be an easy task, but the fact that they have the opportunity is a big positive for the program. Looking at their previous results, they aren't that far away from having a much better record than their current 6-6. They lost two one run games to Marist; they lost two close games to Fairfield, one in extra innings. They lost big to Manhattan, but also beat them. Same with Canisius, who they actually mercy ruled. So I'm looking for them to be very competitive with the Gaels.

Shannon Jones is having another terrific season, hitting .413 with 9 homers and 40 RBIs. Freshman Jessika-Jo Sandrini has been great in the circle and at the plate. The Saints have also gotten key contributions from all their players. A Siena sweep would make for a very interesting Sunday, but win or lose, the Siena softball program has taken a big step forward.

MAAC Enters Final Weekend Of Regular Season

As we enter the final weekend before the tournament, there is still some uncertainty over who will qualify and what the seedings will be. St. Peter's, Canisius, Rider and Niagara will be playing their final games of the 2011 season this weekend. Marist has clinched a spot in the top four, and I believe Fairfield has also.

Here is where the weekend may become interesting. Manhattan has the good fortune to be playing St. Peter's Saturday, so might as well give them 10 wins right now. Saturday's big match up will be Iona at Siena. One win for the Gaels in Loudonville will clinch a tournament berth for them and eliminate Siena. If the Saints sweep Iona, they would then need help to qualify. Siena will play at St. Peter's Sunday. They would have to win those two games, but I doubt they would have any trouble doing so. Assuming they did, they would qualify if Iona loses once in their Sunday doubleheader vs. Manhattan (to be played in New Rochelle). In that scenario, Iona would be out if they lost. But as I said, one win for Iona at Siena would qualify both the Gaels and the Lady Jaspers, unless the apocalypse happens and the LJs lose to St. Peter's, in which case I would have to rewrite this.

As far as seeding is concerned, Fairfield will be visiting Marist on Sunday, after hosting Niagara on Saturday. The Red Foxes have only the Sunday games remaining on their schedule.

All of this is leading up to what should be an exciting MAAC Championship, which begins a week from today.

Weather Report

The recent rainy weather has wiped out pretty much the whole MAAC schedule today, although it looks like Niagara @ Syracuse is still on. Has to have been the worst Northeast spring in many years.
Let's hope we see some drastic improvement in the weather for next week's tournament in Poughkeepsie, NY.
